1. What inspired you to begin your publishing journey?
Doing The Recess Coat with my sister-in-law, Jan Wyant was a dream come true. I have loved her artwork over the years and when she agreed to share her talent with my story, it has become a legacy to our families.
2. What led you to choose the self-publishing route vs. traditional publishing?
For over a year I explored the traditional book publishing process and found that many children’s books being published now are connected to celebrities with TV anchor personalities. I decided to give self publishing with Gatekeeper Press a try.
3. How did you select Gatekeeper Press as your publishing family?
I chose Gatekeeper Press after searching through several self publishing companies. My conversation with Tony Chellini about the company led me to my decision to publish with them.
4. Were there any moments during your publishing journey where your expectations differed from the actual process?
I thought my original text file would be used during the printing process as it aligned with the illustrations. I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity of the illustrations once they were printed.
5. What aspects of the process did you find most enjoyable?
The marketing videos that were created for the book captured the essence of the storyline. My marketing manager has been helpful and supportive.
6. What challenges did you encounter during your publishing journey?
There was a printing error in the first edition that caused me some anxiety, however, it was resolved in good form.
7. Would you change anything if you could do it all over again?
I would ask more questions about the process of self publishing. It was a learning experience for me.
8. What were the most surprising aspects of self-publishing with Gatekeeper Press?
The most surprising aspect of self publishing was how little I knew about marketing.
9. Would you recommend fellow authors self-publish with Gatekeeper Press?
I would do this publishing journey again, which is its own testimony.
10. With your dream book a reality, what goals do you aspire to achieve with your story?
The goal is to get children to read and parents to participate in the process with them. I want them to cherish their elementary experiences.
