Not long ago, I came across a meme that suggested shouting “plot twist!” when things don’t go as planned. It made me laugh out loud, but it also struck a chord. We all encounter unexpected turns in life, and sometimes the best way to handle them is to shift our perspective and keep moving forward.
The same concept applies to writing. Whether you’re working on a novel, memoir, or non-fiction piece, it’s easy to get stuck. You might have a clear vision of where your story is going when you set out, but when you hit a roadblock, it can feel impossible to move forward. This is where the idea of a plot twist can come in handy—not just as a tool for surprising your readers, but as a way to shake up your creative process and find a new direction for your story.
How Plot Twists Can Revive Your Writing
- Injects New Energy: When your story feels like it’s treading water, a plot twist can create the momentum you need. It challenges your characters (or real-life figures) to respond in ways that reveal new facets of their personalities, opening up fresh possibilities for your narrative.

Here are some classic twist ideas that have proven effective over time:
- The Unexpected Visitor: A sudden knock at the door, an unexpected phone call, or the arrival of an unforeseen character can introduce new dynamics into your story. This simple twist can set off a chain reaction of events that push your narrative in a new direction.
- The Sudden Betrayal: When a trusted ally turns against the protagonist, it can change the entire trajectory of the story. This twist forces the main character to find new ways to achieve their goals, making for a more engaging narrative.
- The Unanticipated Event: A shocking weather event, an unexpected illness, or an unforeseen accident can shake up the story and wake up your characters to how they handle – or don’t handle – an unexpected challenge.
- The Big Reveal: Unveiling a long-hidden truth can dramatically alter the course of your story. Whether it’s a secret past, a lie exposed, or a forgotten memory uncovered, this type of twist can move your story forward. If you do add in a Big Reveal, make a note to yourself to plant the seeds of that idea in the earlier parts of your story so the Reveal that sprouts from it feels like an authentic, delightful surprise.

When you introduce a plot twist, it’s essential that your characters’ reactions remain authentic. Their responses should drive the story forward, helping you progress in your writing. Keep in mind: your twist should enhance your story’s trajectory, not derail it. The best endings are those that are both surprising and inevitable, so ensure your twist brings you closer to a conclusion that feels right.
