We are currently aware of a series of scam attempts targeting independent authors, including false claims and impersonation of legal professionals. These messages are entirely false. Please take a moment to read this advisory in full—it’s important for your protection and peace of mind.
🚨 What’s Happening:
A number of our authors have received nearly identical voicemails from an individual identifying himself as “Attorney Ben Clark.” He warns that Gatekeeper is not a legitimate company and encourages authors to call him back at 917-730-2968. Example Transcript:
“This is attorney Ben Clark calling about your book. It was reported to us because of your publisher, Gatekeeper Press. Just in case you haven’t heard what’s going on with them… this is not a legitimate publishing company. Be very careful. My direct number is 917-730-2968.”
This message is completely false
and is part of a scare tactic scam used to exploit and mislead authors.
🚩 Red Flags to Watch For:
- Identical voicemails sent to multiple authors — indicating a mass-targeted campaign.
- Fear-based language meant to prompt immediate action.
- Unverified legal threats from someone claiming to be an “attorney” with no credentials or documentation.
- Vague accusations like “your book has been reported” without specifics.
- Cold calls without prior contact — a legitimate attorney would never behave this way.
🔍 What This Scam Might Be:
- A phishing attempt to collect your personal information.
- An unethical poaching tactic by a predatory publishing company or fraudulent marketing firm.
- An impersonation ploy from someone falsely claiming legal authority to manipulate you.
What Gatekeeper Press Is Doing:
We are actively documenting this issue and taking steps to protect our authors. If you receive a suspicious call or email, do not respond or engage. Instead:
- Forward the message to your Author Manager or our Post-Publication Support Team.
- Block the number or sender.
- Report it on platforms like https://whocallsme.com or https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.
