1. What inspired you to begin your publishing journey?
Although I had always been an avid reader of hard science fiction, and had written non-fiction I had never considered writing sci-fi. One night in 2019, a very vivid and detailed dream outlined the plot for “.99999”. That dream, combined with the onset of COVID inspired me, along with my dialogue-coach partner, to bring my dream to reality in the form of a book.
2. What led you to choose the self-publishing route vs. traditional publishing?
I did not want the hassle of dealing with a publisher, making artistic and creative changes based on their editors’ perceptions, so I selected a self-publishing group. When I wrote” Folding Time”, the second book of the trilogy, I continued with the same publisher, but the experience was much less satisfactory.
3. How did you select Gatekeeper Press as your publishing family?
When I sat down to write “Temporal Destiny,” the climactic ending to the trilogy, I wanted to stay with self-publishing, but I wanted the best product possible, so I wanted the “Best In Class” publisher. Research and referrals made Gatekeeper Press the only choice.
4. Were there any moments during your publishing journey where your expectations differed from the actual process?
I am not particularly good at keyboarding. I found that I could not express my thoughts in writing as quickly as they came into my head, so the process took longer and was more challenging than I had expected.
.
5. What aspects of the process did you find most enjoyable?
I found most enjoyable bringing the characters to life, and, in a way, through the three books, they became part of my universe of friends.
6. What challenges did you encounter during your publishing journey?
I have the kind of mind that tends to go in many directions at once. My greatest challenge was not getting caught up in the sub-plots but rather following my outline to reach my ending.
7. Would you change anything if you could do it all over again?
I would have used Gatekeeper Press for my first two novels.
8. What were the most surprising aspects of self-publishing with Gatekeeper Press?
The professional, process-driven system of getting an author from the beginning to the end of what’s necessary to create a professional product the author can be proud of.
9. Would you recommend fellow authors self-publish with Gatekeeper Press?
Follow the system; do it by the numbers.
10. With your dream book a reality, what goals do you aspire to achieve with your story?
With the story that I have woven through these three books, although “Temporal Destiny” can be read as a stand-alone, my goals were to teach a little science, tell a good story, create memorable characters, and keep the reader guessing until the end.
