Editing and Proofreading
We offer editing services for all genres of books, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, humor, and more. Whether you need a proofread, a copy edit, or a developmental edit, we can take care of all of your editing needs.
Free Sample Edit
We want to show you exactly how we can improve your manuscript, which is why we offer a free sample edit of up to 1,000 words. Upload your content below for a free sample edit and we’ll respond within 24 hours. Note: we do not provide sample edits for scientific or academic papers.
We consider your file to be copyrighted matter and we respect your ownership of the expressed content.
Post-Production Proofread $15 per 1,000 words
We meticulously examine your fully formatted, print-ready interior file for major text and formatting inconsistencies, errors, and omissions. We check for pagination issues, missing headers/footers, incorrect references to figures/images, awkward page breaks, widows and orphans, and anything else that does not conform with industry standards.
Copy Edit + Proofread $30 per 1,000 words
We provide a comprehensive, line-by-line, technical check for all typographical errors, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax. We also address language-usage issues and provide minor recommendations for improving the overall flow of the text. We ensure you have a technically sound manuscript ready for typesetting and layout.
Includes three rounds of edits:
1. Initial Copy Edit
2. A review of your revisions
3. Post-Production Proofread
Developmental Edit + Copy Edit + Proofread $50 per 1,000 words
In addition to the tasks performed during a copy edit, we restructure sentences, paragraphs, and chapters where needed and provide a macro-level focus on style and consistency (e.g., which abbreviations are used, how numbers are written, which words are hyphenated, what fonts are used for headers/sub headers, etc.). We review the quality of the writing itself, addressing organization, transitions, tone, voice, and complexity. For fiction titles, we check for plot holes and character inconsistencies, and we make suggestions as to the book’s dialogue, pace, and clarity.
Includes four rounds of edits:
1. Initial Developmental Edit
2. A review of your revisions
3. Copy Edit
4. Post-Production Proofread

Please convey my thanks to your editor. The editing was thorough and professional and I really appreciate her help. Her notes were also of great value and I made use of them in minor rewrites. It is abundantly clear to me that Gatekeeper is quite serious about attention to detail and enabling the nascent author to produce something to be proud of. It is therefore my intention to continue with Gatekeeper through the process and to engage your illustrator to work on the cover. Again, please thank your editor for providing such a glow to the Gatekeeper brand.
I’ve always told people how funny it is that you can give your project to ten different editors and they all come back with something different, but out of all of them, you are definitely the most consistent. I also noticed that the previous editors had gotten confused about things that you caught. BRAVO!
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does your Editing and Proofreading process take?
This depends on the word count and complexity of your file(s). We are typically able to return even the longest and most complex files to you within four weeks.
Do you edit by hand or through Microsoft Word?
We edit using Microsoft Word’s “track changes” feature to allow you to accept or reject each individual edit we make to your file(s). If you are unfamiliar with this feature, your Author Manager will guide you through it.
Can I have my book edited even if I don’t have you publish it?
Absolutely. You can have us edit your book a la carte or as part of one of our publishing packages.
